Marion Supervisor's News
By Monica Deyo

The Youth Baseball Program has already completed its sign-ups in preparation for Opening Day on May 2. If you have any questions about the program, you may reach the coordinator, John Rector, at 589-4155. We need a Park Supervisor for the months of May and June when the baseball teams are scheduled to play.

This position involves preparing the fields for the games, being in charge of the grounds during the games, and making sure that the buildings are locked and nothing has been left out on the fields afterwards. It is an ideal job for someone who is at least 18 years old and wishes to make some extra money...how about a college student who is returning for the summer?

Call me at 926-4145 if you are interested or know of someone who might be a good candidate. I am also accepting applications at any time for counselors for the Summer Day Camp Program held at the Town Park during July and August; you may pick these up at the Town Hall and return them to me, I will see that they are given to the Recreation Programmer.

We are still working on the completion of the Town Hall, still needed are the exterior lights, the Library awning (it will be maroon instead of blue), a door for the Buffalo Street entrance which will match the front door, and benches, planters, and waste receptacles for the front of the building. All that remains inside is to have new carpeting installed and bulletin boards which will be hung on the wall in the new alcove; these will be for public notices so that the community can use them for their announcements. We're getting there, slowly but surely!

Councilman Ron Lonneville has worked diligently on drainage projects throughout the winter, including photographing all of our problem areas. This year we will do some clean-out work on the creek that runs from South Main to Mill Street, as well as clean-up on the lower end of Union Street. Hopefully this will allow the run-off water from the hamlet to get through the creek and on out to Smith Road.

We have a new business in the Industrial Park on Sunset Drive - Dunlap Machine, owned by Roger Dunlap. We are glad that we were able to accommodate him so that he did not have to move his business elsewhere. The Town Board will need to address the need for additional areas in the Town that can be rezoned to industrial, so that we can continue to offer prospective manufacturers the opportunity to relocate in Marion. We currently do not have any vacant sites available, although there are a few with a building already on them. I have had several inquiries regarding this issue.

Robin Boerman and her committee are hard at work planning a great Heritage Day for 1998, with some new changes in the Saturday entertainment schedule along with the return of the more popular ones. The Street Dance will again be held on Saturday night, and the parade will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m.. All events are scheduled for August 29 and 30, and your help is needed in all areas. The more people we, have working, the better our festival will be. Please call her at 926-4356 and volunteer to help so that we can continue this weekend of celebration for years to come (when there are only a few who do all the work year after year, there's the very real danger of burn-out).

Finally, we are sorry that the sidewalks on Walworth Road were not wanted by the majority of the people on that road. The Town Board had a vision of improving the appearance of that entrance into Town, as well as to offer a safe place for people to walk other than the roadside. Williamson's new sidewalks are very attractive, and ours would have been the same. It's our loss.
