Arcadia Town Clerk Hazel Herdman announced her plans to retire effective April 1. Herdman has been with the town for 23 years, first as deputy clerk under then Town Clerk Eleanor Brennessel, and the last five years as Town Clerk.

Appointed unanimously to fill the clerk's position is Deputy Clerk Diane Allerton, who has been employed as deputy clerk for five years. The appointment of Allerton is effective 4/1/98 until 12/29/98.

Diane AllertonAllerton must run in a special election in November, to determine who will be town clerk on January 1, 1999 to fill the remaining one year of the four-year term of Hazel Herdman.

A complete study is planned by NYS Department of Transportation on a proposed lower speed limit for Blue Cut Road.

Councilman Mike DeJohn reported on a meeting that was held last week concerning Blue Cross/Blue Shield for town employees. The town is in the process of updating insurance coverage on all levels so as to provide the best plan at the most reasonable cost to employees, retirees, and the town. DeJohn indicated that a meeting with all town employees and a representative from BC/BS will be scheduled.

Marty Aman, representing MRB Group, was on hand to present draft copies of new standard forms to be used by the town when dealing with subdivision, construction and other code enforcement issues. Councilman Gary Grant said that he was concerned that fees charged for various applications will cover necessary engineering costs. Aman, of MRB indicated that with a flat-rate option, it is easier to assure that costs are covered.

Nicholas Lommis of 5650 Tellier Road was approved by the board as a new member of the Fairville Fire Department.

The board gave Debbie Steurrys/Brian Safford of 3032 Maple Ridge Road, the go-ahead to apply for special authorization to operate a motorcycle repair shop at their residence. The planning board will deal with this issue on March 16, and a public hearing is scheduled.

A resolution was approved to set a date for a public hearing on April 7, at 8:15 p.m. to answer questions and concerns about the Southwest Water Improvement Area. Councilman Grant proposed moving the regular town board meeting from April 14 to April 7 to coincide with the scheduled public hearing, so that a decision could be made by the board in a timely fashion.
