The Newark boys swim banquet was held on March 10 at the Zappia Catering house.

Coach Katie Amyot thanked parents for their support. "It was a year of change, new goals, new captains, records being broken, and a brand-new desire," she said. "This squad presented character, responsibility, and hard work and they displayed citizenship, courage, prudence and faith."

The Reds were 5-7-1 overall and 3-5 in the league.

Tom Alberts was an All League selection and was second in the medley relay team that placed in the Sectionals. Ben Compton was All League honorable mention and on the 400 freestyle relay team that won the Sectionals - with Travis Bean, Ricky Nichols and Alberts. Brendan Morrissey was an honorable mention All League selection. Nichols set a new school record in the 100 backstroke, the 100 freestyle, and 200 freestyle. He was a part of the school record setting 100 medley relay team with Compton, Morrissey and Alberts. Nichols was on the 400 freestyle relay team with Alberts, Compton and Bean.

Other members of the squad are Tim DeRuyter, Russell Van Tyle, Jim Mooney, Paul Scarpati and Adam Bald. Cory Cox was assistant coach to Katie Amyot.

Ben Williams won the Scholastic Swimmer award; Jason Whitbeck is Most Improved; Tom Alberts is Swimmer of the Year; Rick Nichols is Most Valuable Swimmer and will be team captain next year. (J. Miranda photo)
