SANE program nurses at NWCH

Gail Knowlton, RN, Susan Martin, RN, and Cynthia Witter, RN, have completed training to become Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) Program nurses. The training enables them to handle the special physical and emotional needs of sexual assault victims. It also prepares them to work with police and law enforcement officials if the victim chooses to proceed with legal action against their attacker.

SANE program nursesNewark-Wayne's program, which was partly funded by a grant from the Federal Stop Violence Against Women Act Program, is the only program of its kind currently active in Western New York State. It began operation in the summer of 1997.

The training for SANE nurses is extensive and covers: examination and treatment of the sexual assault victim; proper collection and maintenance of forensic evidence; providing court room testimony; and assessment of the patient's and their family members' emotional needs. SANE nurses also provide testing for sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy testing, and follow-up with patients.

Our goal is to expand SANE coverage to the Myers location once we have enough staff trained to cover both campuses," said Pam Simmons, RN, SANE program coordinator.

Newark-Wayne Hospital is an affiliate of ViaHealth.
