School Board Notes On Wednesday, the Newark School Board discussed the "Take Your Child to Work Day" that is scheduled for April 24. This day, a legal absence day in this state, has come under criticism. Many students just take the day off, and the school day is interrupted. Board member Gloria Matias supports the day, when serious students have a chance to see what goes on in the workplace. After board discussion, and input from students, the "Day" will be continued and evaluated. Teachers may require written reports from participants. Senior privileges were discussed. Vice Principal Linda Kantor defends senior privileges, saying these foster and encourage time management. Matias said that lessening the workload in the senior year does not prepare students for the shock of college. Principal Gary Grant says senior privileges allow students to make decisions and police themselves, which they must do at college. Henry Hann, superintendent for curriculum, reported on the State Education Department (SED) results. The SED tracks results by district, school by school. The information includes comparisons of averages according to grade enrollment, passing and passing with distinction, in all subjects, as well as the arts, health, phys ed, career development, and occupational studies. Kelley School Principal Gary Brookins reported on the Kelley/Cornell University Courtyard Project. Students from Cornell working with Kelley students will build a landscape/map of New York State in the school courtyard, using plants that are native to the areas they represent. District Business Manager Robert Fogel reported that bids for the capital improvement project were opened and appear to be in line and acceptable. The Wayne County Performing Arts Awards program will be held on Thursday, May 19. Again this year, Don Alhart of WOKR Channel 13 will be the emcee. Copyright © 1998 |
