Lyons Aldi's opened Thursday

Aldi'sThe Aldi's in Lyons on Route 31 opened its doors on March 19. The 17,200-sq.-ft. store offers no frills, no service, and inexpensive groceries. Shoppers may rent shopping carts for 25 cents and must bag their own groceries. (Bring your own bags or boxes, or you'll pay for grocery bags.)

The store brings its own brand of shopping to a village that for many years has had only one supermarket. Time will tell if the shoppers don't mind bagging their own groceries, paying in cash, purchasing only frozen meat, or if they'll travel back down the street to Loson's Big M.

Aldi is based in Germany, where it was founded 50 years ago. There are 400-plus Aldi's markets in the United States.
