Morrissey receives Eagle Scout award

Brendan Morrissey of Troop 122 in Newark received his Eagle Scout Award during ceremonies held at St. Michael's Church on March 15. The ceremony was led by Russell Harris, Troop John, Brendan and Joan MorrisseyCommittee member.

Letters of congratulations from Senator Nozzolio and President Clinton were read by Scoutmaster Dave Engquist. John Oelfke, Scout Executive with the Finger Lakes Council, read a letter of congratulations from the Council. Don Miller, an Eagle Scout representing August Mauer Post, presented Brendan with an American Flag, plaque, and citation from the Legion.

Members of Troop 122 conducted the Light of the Eagle ceremony, and Richard Van Dongen, read the Charge to the Eagle. The Eagle award was presented by Stephanie Garland, Assistant Scoutmaster.

Deb Housel, Pastoral Assistant at St. Michael's, offered a reading, which was followed by remarks by Brendan. He described his Eagle project, which involved the collection of over 1500 used children's books which were distributed to Myers Community Hospital, Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, and the Head Start program in Newark. He noted that the entire troop contributed to the collection effort, including scouts, their families and scout leaders. Following the ceremony, a reception for about 90 people was held in the church hall.
