Timerson wins Distinguished Award
By Laura Severson

Brad Timerson, a science teacher at Newark High School, was awarded the Distinguished Teacher Award, sponsored by Rochester Community Savings Bank.

The honored teacher must be involved in activities outside of the classroom, have a good sense of humor, assign real work, and show an active interest in student life, in and outside of school. Timerson's excellent teaching ability was recognized by Newark's chapter of the National Honor Society, which submitted his name.

He was later chosen as one of three distinguished teachers in the Greater Rochester Area by the Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester.

Timerson is a 1972 graduate of Potsdam College, and has been teaching in Newark for 26 years. He is the Instructional Supervisor for Science, grades 9-12.

He remembers one girl he tutored in Physics. She found out mid-senior year she was required, by her future college, to take Regents Physics. Timerson used his free time to help her complete the required number of labs and learn the material. She passed the Regents in June, without ever taking the class.

Timerson enjoys many activities that include science. He has an observatory at home which he allows his Astronomy and Meteorology class to use. He is also connected to a program in California where he can, through his computer, connect to the telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory and have pictures downloaded to show his classes. He arrives at school early to utilize a 6 a.m. appointment for the telescope.

Last year, Timerson participated in a program called Ambassadors to Jupiter, in which he worked on in conjunction with the space program and the Galileo Project to educate the public about a space mission to orbit Jupiter. He was chosen as one of two from New York State to give presentations at places like the Library in Newark, a computer convention, and the Rochester Astronomy Club.

Timerson is also active in several sports like golf, softball and volleyball.

High School Principal Gary Grant said, "Mr. Timerson represents the many excellent teachers serving our students at Newark High School. It is obvious that he enjoys science and teaching. That happy combination has benefited hundreds of Newark students."
