Newark bus crashes, injuries minor Watkins Glen Police reported an accident Monday evening, involving charter buses carrying Newark students and adults. At 7:15 p.m., police were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident involving two buses. Three buses, loaded with students from the Newark district were returning from a trip to Williamsburg, Virginia. After travelling down Route 414, a mile and one-half hill, the second bus struck the first bus in the rear when it attempted to stop for a red light at the intersection of Routes 14 and 414. Preliminary investigation determined a brake failure on the second bus. Al three buses are owned by Niagara Scenic Bus Lines from Hamburg. Twelve students were transported via ambulance to Schuyler Hospital and treated for minor injuries, including sore necks, bumps and bruises. The operator of the bus that struck the rear of the first bus was Laverne Brown of Buffalo. Brown was also transported to Schuyler Hospital, treated and released. Brown was issued a summons for a log book violation. Police officials in Watkins Glen requested inspection of the bus by the State Police Scales Division. State Police from the Horseheads did take the bus involved in the collision out of service due to brake problems. A bus from T&T Bus Lines was called to transport the students back to Newark. Investigation is continuing at this time.
