By Carolyn Adriaansen (926-4436) The Marion Publications Club Chicken Barbecue is May 9, at the elementary school. According to a history of Marion, written in 1926 by Vera Curtis: "There were four Indian village sites in the town of Marion and also a burial site. A village site on the Stephen Reeves farm, one on the John Dean farm, and also one on the Daniel F. Curtis farm. The burial site and fourth village site was in the southwest corner of Marion along two small streams." Can anyone add to this information? Birthday wishes to Bertha Kooman on May 31. Gordon and Shirley Buyck were out from Michigan visiting their mother, Kate Buyck. Chris Davis, from Newark, will be speaking on "Peppermint" at the Marion Historic Association meeting on Tuesday, May 12 at 7 p.m. The public is cordially invited. Remember the Peppermint Industry began in Wayne County. "The merry month of May" has been associated with dancing, singing, love and general rejoicing that spring has returned after a long and dreary winter. During May, down through the centuries, history-making events have occurred. In 1607 the first permanent settlement was made at Jamestown, Virginia; in 1616 Manhattan Island was purchased for about twenty-four dollars; in 1823 "Home Sweet Home" was sung for the first time in London; 1869 saw the completion of our first transcontinental railroad; in 1881 the American Red Cross was organized by Clara Barton and in 1907 Miss Anna Jarvis started the observance of Mother's Day.
