roof at aeccNew AECC
roof leaks

By John Zornow

At a special village board meeting last Friday, trustees heard all about the community center roof.

They were informed that more than one year after the re-opening of the Alex Eligh Community Center, roof problems still exist. The village trustees, upset by photos of crooked shingles, poor cap work, and other inconsistencies, want some answers. Reports of the roof problems surfaced last fall, when village D.P.W. crews cleaning the gutters noticed poor workmanship.

During the winter season, Jim Sadler, manager of village buildings, corresponded with the Pike Company of Rochester, general contractor for the AECC project. The Pike Co. sent a crew to repair the roof.

Dick Colacino, chairman of the renovation committee for the community center, does not accept the repair efforts and insists that the entire roof should be replaced without charge.

"It is clearly a poor job," said Colacino.

Dennis Tellier, a local roofing contractor with many years of experience, agrees. "The gussets are not even straight," said Tellier.

Many residents want to know why the problems weren't discovered sooner. Some blame the architect, some say that the village code enforcement officer, who was clerk of the works for the project, should have noticed the problem. Mayor Fred Pirelli said the contractor would be contacted to stop the repair work immediately. Deputy Mayor John Palermo, as well as village attorney Art Williams, urged the board to try to negotiate with the Pike Co. to replace the roof.

According to Colacino, the Pike Co. has a good reputation and has been in business for a long time.

"We will give Pike an out and an opportunity to save face in this matter," said Village Attorney Williams. However, according to Mike Tonovitz, village clerk, many letters already exchanged between the contractor and the village have proven unsuccessful in reaching an acceptable compromise.
