The Ride for Missing Children passed through Palmyra, Newark and Lyons on its way to Utica on Friday. A 9:45 a.m. ceremony was held at the Lyons Village Park. The Lyons stop was one of eight along the 125-mile ride from Canandaigua to Utica by some 100 bicyclists. Photo in Newark taken by Sandra Marcano. The ride was to bring attention to the plight of missing children, highlight the need for child safety education, and raise funds to support the poster distribution for missing children. This distribution is carried out by the New York office of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. In the past 2-3 years, the New York office of this agency has distributed over 400,000 posters of 97 missing children. The group is also working toward the assurance of a US postage stamp honoring America's missing children. The bicycle riders are called "Team Sara" and "Friends of Team Sara" named in honor of Sara Ann Wood who was abducted several years ago in Herkimer. Students from the Lyons Elementary School gave Attorney General Dennis Vacco a check for contributions raised for the "Pennies for Poster" Program. Copyright © 1998 |
