Newark School Board meets
By John Zornow

Lincoln PTA visits board - Christine Mizro, Principal of the Lincoln Elementary School on North Main St., introduced a group of parents and children representing the Lincoln School PTA, who were on hand to present gifts to the school board members. Mizro indicated that the PTA and children were doing this in appreciation for what the board has done for them. Board President David Howard thanked the group on behalf of the board and assured them that the gesture meant a great deal to the board.

Maintenance/Renovation update - Gary Hoffman and Jim Wakefield of Christa Construction attended the meeting to give an update of progress on the maintenance/renovation project. Several items were discussed that needed attention that were either unfinished or unsatisfactory.

Board member Gloria Matias made a suggestion that the entire board needed to tour all the schools as a group to monitor the progress of the renovation project. Dave Howard expressed reservations about the need for the group tour, indicating that the system was working as put into place, saying that items of question are brought to the attention of the clerk of the works and then handled by each area of responsibility.

Board member David Honness disagreed, arguing that it was the board's duty to taxpayers to closely monitor the situation. Gary Hoffman of Christa Construction reminded the board that checks and balances for the project were in place and working thru principals and the clerk of the works.

Students bringing their children to school -The first draft of a policy was disclosed that would deal with students bringing children to school. This first reading was discussed by the board and public and reads as follows:

CHILDREN IN SCHOOL POLICY - "The primary focus of our schools is to maximize learning outcomes for its students. To that end, every effort should be made to minimize disruptions which could take the student(s) away from that focus. It is, however, the policy of the Board of Education that students will not be able to bring to school, during normal school hours, any child without an educational reason as determined by the respective school principal."
