Economic Development

Robert M. Lyons/Douglas E. Doebler
The Chamber will award Robert M. Lyons and Douglas E. Doebler the Citizens of the Year for Economic Development award.

This prestigious award, last given in 1991, is in recognition of economic growth for the Newark area. These individuals exemplify this award through their efforts over the past several years. Most recently, Doebler and Lyons developed a residential neighborhood in the village called Trout Run (where this photo was taken.)

The Trout Run development has 35 new homes, with the 36th under construction. It has a tax base of more than $2.8 million. These men took the risk and purchased this raw land and turned it into a family neighborhood. H.U.D. Community Development Block Grant Financing, cooperative efforts with the local municipality, non-profit agencies, mortgage providers and Gerber Homes all helped to make this first-time homebuyer development possible.

This development puts some $100,000 of taxes back into the community. Individually, Bob and Doug have done other extensive economic development in the village of Newark.

Lyons, president of R.M. Lyons Inc, is a resident of Newark, a member of the St. Michael's Church and a member of the Elks Club. He has developed several projects that have had an impact on Newark, some of which include: Historic handrail reconstruction at the Post Office, Conversion of the Armstrong Senior Living facility, Construction of the Lakeview Mental Health, Blue Cut Rd. Apartments and general contracting services for many local businesses.

Doebler, broker for Gerber Homes Sales, is a member of the Newark Rotary Club, on the Board of Directors of the Newark Wayne Community Hospital Foundation and Habitat for Humanity of Wayne County. He has owned and managed several apartment buildings and constructed two multi-family units in the village. Doug has also acted as site selection chairman for the two Habitat homes built in Newark, and has constructed many new homes in the area.
