Newark Village Board briefs

-The 25 to 30 people attending Monday's Newark Village Board meeting cheered when it was announced that the Clinton Street bridge has finally opened. The traffic signal lights were not 100 percent complete, but the bridge is open.

- Eleanor Palermo, representing Seneca Foods, presented checks for $1000 each to the Newark Fire Department, NAVA, and Newark Police Department in appreciation for their efforts and reponse to the needs of Seneca Foods and their employees. Palermo praised the efforts of these organizations for their part in helping Seneca have a good year.

- Sergio Esteban of LaBella Associates gave an update of the progress of the Newark Veterans Memorial Bridge. He indicated that all steel repairs were done, the sandblasting was complete and the structure was now being primed and painted. According to Esteban, the deck grating had not yet arrived. Installation will begin as soon as it gets to Newark. He said that an opening by Christmas is still possible.

- Municipal Board Chairman James SanAngelo gave his report by announcing that the Marbletown Fire Department has been approved for the allotment of 5000 gallons of water per day, once the water district is formed. He also revealed that the municipal board is negotiating with the Town of Phelps for the sale of water. SanAngelo also recommended that Kathy Reilly be hired to serve as billing clerk. Also, SanAngelo strongly reccomended that the board approve a second person to work in the water department area, who would also be trained to help out as needed in the village office. The board approved this proposal after brief discussion.

- Meeting agendas were discusssed. Trustee Peter Blandino expressed concern about the number of extra meetings being held to address issues that crop up between monthly meetings. Blandino believes that two monthly board meetings are needed, and he made a motion to this effect. This motion received a quick second from Trustee VanDemortel.

Mayor Pirelli, who has been against two meetings a month, made his pleas again, saying that more meetings would be more time wasted. Pirelli and Trustee Palermo said that to require the Village clerk, attorney, police chief and fire chief to attend yet another meeting was unfair. Trustee Tony Virts suggested that the board try the two meeting schedule for the months of January, February, and March.

Blandino changed his motion to reflect the compromise. The vote to change to two meetings was 3-2; Pirelli and Palermo voted NO.
