A visit to Country Pets and More
On a recent visit, when we walked in the door, there was a cage of baby ferrets, three of which knocked each other over trying to get attention. It was tempting to pet them, but because they are in a cage they will nip at your finger. (Pain keeps you from being tempted too much.) After a few minutes, their bowl walked across the cage and back - one of the babies had discovered he could move it while it was on his back. In a cage next door, an adult ferret was peeking with sleepy eyes at the youngsters who kept waking him up. As we watched, a baby cockatiel tried talking to us. Apparently, he was used to having a treat at that time of day and tried to let us know.
We wandered through the store talking to Betty - the rabbits and guinea pigs were taking a nap, the hedgehog was hiding in his little tube. In the aquariums, the lizards were basking in their artificial sunshine, enjoying the heat. I love peeking into the salt water tank. Sometimes, you'll find anemones, starfish, sea horses and pretty exotic fish. Betty also has hedgehogs, rabbits, mice, gerbils, guinea pigs, birds and lots of fish. I feel comfortable asking Betty my silly questions I know she won't judge me and I don't feel stupid asking. One day, I went in asking about a fish I had purchased elsewhere. I had this fish in the same tank with my tropical fish. Suddenly, fish were disappearing no apparent reason. I guess the reason was obvious, but I had trouble believing my calm, docile, favorite fish could be the culprit. I found out my calm fish is nocturnal and had been swallowing my other little fish at night. (Thanks to Betty's advice, he is now in another tank with compatible fish. He seems happy.)
The parakeets now sweetly sit on their perch in the kitchen. They probably feel a little confused, but they hear familiar sounds of other birds and aquariums. They must wonder where the furry black cat watching them from the floor came from. (I know he must wonder the same about them.) Now, though, when the pretty songbirds of spring and summer leave for their winter vacation, we will have the songs of spring and summer from inside. (Do parakeets learn to speak? Our cockatiel tries really hard but, as of yet, hasn't managed it. Well, she's only twelve... maybe it takes a while for birds?) I'm certain Betty would be glad to hear some of your stories or help with any questions you may have. Copyright © 1998 |
