History lesson: Starting in the 1840's, there was a "mass immigration" of Dutch immigrants to the United States. This migration had both economic and religious causes and was concentrated in the Midwest, with the exception of a considerable number of immigrants in New York State. Many historians differ on what cause was responsible for the mass migration. The question has been summed up in this way: Whether it was "the hunger of the souls of the Dutch folk or the necessities of their bodies that chiefly motivated their mass migration to America."
