Monday, the Newark Reds Varsity Girls volleyball team clinched the Finger Lakes East crown with a 3-0 win over the Panthers at Geneva. The title is Newark's first in more than 15 years. Newark won by scores of 15-6, 15-4, 15-5. Amy Hares had five kills; April Allen added four kills with Hares adding nine assists. Newark finished the regular season with a 17-1 overall/11-1 League record. In non-league action on October 18, Newark picked up a 3-0 win at Aquinas. The Reds won by scores of 15-5, 15-5 and 15-9. Sarah Coolidge and Kim Golding had a combined ten kills for the Lady Reds. The girls posted a thrilling 3-0 win over the Victor Blue Devils on October 15 at home. Defeating the Blue Devils assured the Reds of at least a tie for the league crown. In the first set Newark trailed 12-6 before rallying for a 16-14 win. Newark won the second set 15-13. In the Reds final set of the night Victor was within one at 13-12 before falling 15-13. Crystal McIlwain had five aces and 10 assists, Amy Hares had 10 assists and six kills; Sarah Coolidge, April Allen and Kadi Burgess each had five kills. Courtney McVicker blasted 11 kills and blocked three spikes for Victor. The Blue Devils dropped to 13-3 overall and 10-2 League.
