On September 19, groups of volunteers from around Wayne County will meet at waterfront areas to pick up debris and litter. This annual beach clean-up is part of state-wide and international efforts to improve the marine environment and to raise awareness of the impact of human activity. The Western Finger Lakes Authority coordinates the program for Wayne County waterfront areas, both on the shore of Lake Ontario and along the Erie Canal. Each participating group is given data cards, trash bags and information about the sources of some things they may find. After the clean-up the data cards are sent to the New York State coordinators in the American Littoral Society to compile state-wide data. After the state-wide information is compiled, the data is sent on to a national committee and then to the international organizers. Anyone wanting to be involved should contact Marjorie Haizlip at the Western Finger Lakes Authority, 1-800-724-3867 or wflswmah@redsuspenders.com. Copyright © 1998 |
