Newark School Board meets Wednesday evening, the Newark School Board heard a presentation by Lakeside, a group of teachers who attended a wellness retreat this summer. Their goal is to promote school and community health awareness with a walking program. "Get Moving Newark" will get the community involved, walking enough miles altogether to equal the distance around the world. Board member Gloria Matias offered discussion on a matter involving board philosophy on athletes and law enforcement. She wants the board to adopt a policy that would restrict unsolicited involvement by school personnel in investigations by law enforcement. Some board members asked whether a problem existed; they will check current policy, and Matias will draft a policy for the board to consider. Business Manager Robert Fogel reported on progress of the renovation project. Fogel indicated that a major portion of the work will be done by the end of September, or first of October. He said that most of the work is now being done after school hours. Fogel praised the efforts of school personnel to pitch in to make sure that school started in a timely matter. Facilities Manager Craig Stell added that the energy performance part of the project will get underway soon and will continue through next summer with work being done after school hours. Unofficial opening day enrollment figures were given by School Superintendent Bob Christmann. District-wide enrollment (2870) is down by 32 compared to a year ago. Christmann distributed data showing enrollment by grades, as well as projections through 2002. An agenda was offered for 1998-99.
