Sarah, Jody, Colleen and ShannonNHS swimmers
break five
records

The Newark girls swim team opened up the 1998 season Tuesday, setting five school records.

Newark posted a 53-48 win over the Geneva Panthers on September 15 at home.

Newark's record setting started in the first event of the day as Shannon Lewis, Colleen Boyd, Jody Flannery and Sarah Lewis broke the 200 medley relay record with a time of 2:04.91. The old record was 2:06.21, set in 1988.

Shannon Lewis, an eighth grader, broke the 200 individual medley event in 2:21.37. The old record was set in 1982. Shannon also broke the 100 backstroke record in 1:03.78, set in 1988.

Allison Wahl broke the 100 freestyle mark of :57.27 -- her own record set a year ago. The 200 freestyle relay team of Sarah Lewis, Megan Dash, Emily Williams and Allison Wahl set a record with a time of 1:50.01. The old mark was set a year ago.

Wahl also won the 200 freestyle event (2:06.66). Sarah Lewis placed first in the 50 freestyle (:26.24).

Other winners: Emily Williams in the 500 freestyle (6:22.35); she placed second in the 200 free. Dash was second in the one meter diving and in the 100 butterfly.

Sarah Lewis was second in the 100 breast.

Third place: Flannery in the 200 IM, Casey Powell in the diving, Boyd in the 100 fly, Kelly Leeuwen in the 500 free, the 200 free relay team of Flannery, Powell, Kelli Osterling, and Kelly Leeuwen.
