Volunteers honored at Red Cross dinner

Jackie Dishaw and Nadine BrillThe annual meeting and volunteer recognition dinner for Wayne County Chapter American Red Cross was held last Wednesday in Newark.

The guest speaker was Donald Dudley, CEO, New York Penn Blood Region. Dinner was prepared by members of the American Legion, where the event was held.

Red Cross volunteer projects include blood pressure readings, health fairs at high schools, information booths at the County Fair and Derby Days, First Aid stations at County Fair, Derby Days and Canaltown Days, radio interviews with WACK and WNNR radio, blood presentations, and presentations to civic groups.

Sharon TyoSpecial awards were given after dinner. Jackie Dishaw of Newark won the Harold Spies Award. Jackie Dishaw is pictured with Red Cross Chapter Director Nadine Brill.

Disaster chair Sharon Tyo is pictured, as is new disaster services volunteer Brenda Benham of Sodus. Benham is the postmaster at Alton Post Office.

Brenda BenhamThe Chapter officers are Chairman Pat Mason of Palmyra; First Vice Chair Jane Hubbs of Clyde; Second Vice Chair Bill Stirling of Sodus; Secretary Ellie Duhamel of Geneva; Treasurer Deb Halderman of Manchester.

Vince Craft of Palmyra chairs the First Aid services, Sharon Tyo and Jackie Dishaw take care of Disaster response. First to respond after the Labor Day storm were Tyo, Dishaw and Deb Hellert, since Director Brill was out of the county for the weekend.

Members of the Red Cross Executive Committee are (retiring this year) Cal Bucknam, Rick Gilbert, Fr. Bob Smith, Don Cedruly, Ken Rosenthal; Class Judy and Ken DeKingof '99 Rita Otterbein, George Denniston, Art Williams, Laurie Petrosino, Cathy Potter; Class of 2000 Nancy Briggs, Tom Pusateri, Barb Nittolo, Ernie Barcelo; youth members are Lindsay Johnville of Williamson and Alison Rieck of Walworth.

Also pictured are Judy and Ken DeKing of East Port Bay Road, Wolcott, who volunteered at shelters in Palmyra and Lyons.
