The Newark football team dropped a tough 48-20 decision to the Braves on September 19 at Canandaigua. Newark (2-1) was behind 21-0 at the end of the first half. The Braves got on the score board early when Tom Kenney scored on a 11 yard run. The extra point was good, making it 7-0. Nate Parmenter made it 13-0 when he scored on a one-yard run in the second period. The extra point was good once again making it 14-0. The Braves made it 21-0 when Matt Zappia caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bryan Sanchez. In the second half, running back Dwayne Parker (pictured) scampered 71 yards on the very first play of the second half for a score. The two-point conversion attempt was no good, making it 21-6. Canandaigua answered right back with a 17-yard scoring run by Nate Parmenter making it 27-7. Parker bounced back with another scoring run of 69 yards to make it 27-12. Kenney then scored late in the third period to make it 34-20. Corey Stirpe scored on a pass play from Bryan Hurdle. "We played a good team that beat us at the line of scrimmage," said Coach Mike McGavisk. "We gave up big plays that really hurt us." "We need to play tougher defense," he added. The coach noted that despite the loss he felt his squad had played fairly well. "We need to be the guys pushing and not the guys being pushed," he added. Canandaigua rushed for 329 yards; Kenney had 177 yards rushing for the Braves. Parmenter had 73 yards on nine carries. Parker had 174 yards rushing on 19 carries. Quarterback Bryan Hurdle was nine of 21 from the field for 182 yards with one touchdown pass and one interception. Stirpe had two receptions for 89 yards with one touchdown. Chad Crockford had one reception for 33 yards. Jess Kidder had nine tackles with Stirpe adding an interception. Next week: a look at last night's Homecoming game against the Penn Yan Mustangs.
