NHS baseball season opens Monday

The Newark varsity baseball team will rely on three returning players this season to improve on last year's 7-11 record under Coach Mike McGavisk.

Newark hosts Canandaigua on April 5 at 4:15 at Colburn Park. The April 7 game will take place at Pal-Mac, at 4:15. Geneva plays at Colburn Park on April 9.

Senior shortstop Jason Sloane will be the Reds main offensive threa,t bringing in a .426 batting average from last season. He scored a team-high 24 runs, had 18 runs batted in, 20 stolen bases, 11 walks, and he hit nine doubles, two triples and one home run. "We expect Jason to be one of our team leaders this season," said Coach McGavisk.

Joining Sloane on both the offensive and defensive front will be first baseman Josh Herman. The senior batted .271 with three home runs, 14 RBI, with 13 runs scored. He had two triples stolen 10 bases.

Pitcher Eddie Miranda is expected to take charge on the mound. Miranda posted a 1-4 record with an ERA of 4.61. He had 35 strike-outs in just 41 innings. He was the losing pitcher in several close contests.

Nate DeRue played JV ball and pitched one game last year as a varsity player. Junior Seth DeJohn is expected to see some action on the mound.

Outfielder Peter Simizon, a senior, batted .269 last year with seven hits in 26 at bats. Seniors Adam Ross and Mike Zappia will help the Reds along with junior Ben Converse. Sophomore catcher Eric Spratley batted .281 last season and had 16 hits in 57 at bats. He scored 12 runs.

Other members of the Newark High School team are juniors Trenton Barry and Travis Bean, seniors Brian Urban and Jeff Bray.

The JV Reds under Coach Ron Ceravolo play at Canandaigua on Monday.
