Public Meeting on Crusoe House

On Thursday, April l5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Savannah Town Hall, the Crusoe Site Committee will be holding a public meeting on the future of the Crusoe House. This structure, the oldest building in the Town of Savannah, was the place in which the first town meeting was held. It became the town's first post office, and later a tavern and stage coach stop during the early decades of the 19th century. It was built on the location of a major fording point onto Crusoe Island, used for thousands of years by Native Americans and expanded into a major roadway by early settlers of the region. The Crusoe House is also strategically located on the same site designated for the proposed Environmental Education Center, which enhances its value as a potential tourist site.

The goal of this meeting is to invite community participation into the planning for preservation of the Crusoe house and for its future use.

Speakers at this meeting will include John Spellman, Savannah Town historian, who will address the historical importance of the Crusoe house. George Batterson, Superintendent of Clyde-Savannah Central Schools, will discuss the educational aspects of both the Crusoe house and the Nature Education Center. Richard Corichi will present the perspective of the Savannah Master Plan, and grants and fund-raising in progress will be covered by Kit Fallon and Sharon Lilla of the Wayne Co. Planning Dept.
