Newark woman stabbed to death

Police Chief Bogan interviewed.Josephine Greenwald, 83, was stabbed to death on Monday in her West Sherman Avenue home.

Police Chief Richard Bogan wants to speak to Donald Greenwald, 40, estranged stepson of the victim. Bogan said that shortly after 2 p.m. on August 9, Wayne County 911 received a call from Donald Greenwald, 68, of 104 West Sherman Ave. He reported that he had come home from running errands downtown and found his house broken into, ransacked, and his wife stabbed to death.

Responding police officers found Josephine Greenwald, 83, dead on the living room couch. Newark Police, Wayne County Sheriff's Dept. and the Monroe County Medical Examiner's personnel processed the residence for evidence, according to Bogan.

Bogan said that the invader broke a window on the back door to gain entrance into the house. The older Greenwald 'indicated that there was property taken from the house,' said Bogan.

Bogan is pictured, being interviewed by Darryl Tardy of RNEWS.

The elder Greenwald spent several hours at the police station, helping officers identify potential suspects and pursue leads.

According to the New York State Department of Correctional Services, the younger Greenwald had been incarcerated for a number of years on charges of rape and sodomy. He was released in 1996, but the NYS Division of Parole holds an active warrant for him. Bogan said that Greenwald, Jr. had a "technical violation of his parole, because he went out of state last week."

Bogan would not say that the younger Greenwald was a suspect, and as of Tuesday there were no suspects. However, he said that his department had spoken to dozens of witnesses.

Police officials said he recently worked at Key Industries in Newark, and he lives in Lyons.

Josephine Greenwald had recently suffered a stroke and was wheelchair bound. Bogan said that because of her illness, she and her husband usually "kept to themselves."

"She had been quite ill and Mr. Greenwald was her primary caregiver," he said.
