Marion teacher wins State award

Carol RamseyCarol Ramsey of Marion has received the State Achievement Award from the Pi State (New York) organization of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Presented recently at the society's state-wide convention at Peak N' Peek resort in Clymer, the award recognizes Ramsey for her dedication and service to the state and to education. It is the highest honor given at the state level. As the largest international women educator's organization, with more than 14,000 members in 14 countries, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes excellence in education and learning.

Ramsey has been active in the society since 1977 and currently serves as state co-chair of the United States Forum Committee. She has served as state president, first and second vice-president and chair of several committees. At the chapter level she has served as president, first and second vice-president, treasurer and member or chair of various committees.

She is a workshop presenter and speaker and has worked at the chapter, state, regional and international levels, as well as for educational groups and institutions. Her presentations include such varied topics as Leadership Development, The Art of Delegation, Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, Heroes and Women's Issues as well as specific educational issues and topics.

For her exceptional service to education she received curriculum grants from the Wayne Area Teacher Resource Center, a state scholarship from Pi State, a first place award from Pentronics, Inc. for her teaching ideas, the Exemplary Educator Award from the New York State Association of Compensatory Educators, the Service Award from the Lake Counties Reading Association and the Leadership Management Award from the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Ramsey began her career as an elementary teacher in the Marion Central School District and ended her 37-year career providing instructional support services to students at the junior-senior high school level, as well as serving as adjunct assistant professor at Finger Lakes Community College. She holds a Bachelor's Degree from Cornell University, a Master's Degree from SUNY Geneseo and has taken additional courses from the University of Rochester and Syracuse University.

During her career she served in several capacities for educational organizations including president of Lake Counties Reading Council, Board of Directors of the Wayne Area Teacher Resource Center, Director of the Western Region and Board of Directors of the New York State Reading Association. She has held several offices in the area branch of the American Association of University Women. Ramsey has contributed to her community through her church activities, involvement with the historical society and in literacy work.
