Final weeks of fishing derby

The tension mounts, as anglers begin to jockey for first place positions in the Wayne County 5GrandSlam and Merchants Challenge Fishing Contest.

'Anglers have a whole month left to fish so we expect there will be lots of changes to the leader board before the final day on September 6,' said Marjory Allen Perez.

The 5GrandSlam and Merchants Challenge Fishing Contest, which began in April, is actually three contests in one. Anglers fish for a total of 10 species; five cold water fish and five warm water fish. The challenge is to catch all five cold water fish the 5GrandSlam Challenge; the five warm water fish the Merchants Challenge; or the largest fish in one of the 10 species. The winner of the challenges is determined by total accumulative weight of the fish entered.

'This is the second year that we have held this contest and participation is up,' stated Don Buchwald, of the County Derby Committee. 'We are especially pleased to have so many young people fishing in the contest,' he said.

The Wayne County Federation of Sportsmen sponsors this event which is designed to encourage anglers to fish the waters of Wayne County throughout the season. There is an adult and a youth division of competition. Adult registration is $10.

Registration sites in Wayne County are located at B-E Fishing Tackle, Ontario; Hughes Marina, Williamson; Sodus Bay Tackle & Outfitters, Sodus Point; Bay Bridge Sport Shop and Davenport's Marina, south end of Sodus Bay; Pier One Marina, Wolcott; and Ike's Bait Shop, Newark.
