Missing Sodus

santamr.jpg (5824 bytes)To look outside, winter is definitely here... but will it stay for the winter fun at the Sodus Point this weekend? (Not according to weather reports.) The tree-lighting is at 4 p.m. in Willow Park. The Intermediate Choir will be singing, there will be a presentation on Ice Safety and, of course, don't forget the guest of honor from out of town. WHO? Santa, of course. (I wonder... is his time the same as ours, or is he ahead of us at the North Pole? Did you know that China is l3 hours ahead of us? When it's night here, the people there are at work. I know this because my brother-in-law is there for business. Talk about an adjustment. )

bmaui.jpg (14654 bytes)Speaking of other areas of the world, I received a letter from my friend in Maui. This week's weather was balmy. It's getting chillier in the mornings now. She is lucky that the weather starts out chilly, but warms up quickly. Of course, she is on the slopes of Haleakala, so it would be a bit chillier. (I must admit I was envious while standing out in bitter 28 degrees this morning. Time to get out the boots and find the scarves and mittens - the really warm ones! )

Helen Phillips is enjoying her retirement. Helen worked at the Sodus Primary Library for many years. Even though she's retired, she sounds like she is still busy. She's planning to go to New York City for a little sightseeing (a nice time of year to do that), to do some shopping and see the Radio City Rockettes. The tree at Rockefeller Center will be beautiful. Enjoy! Helen's son is home from San Francisco for two weeks, so she's spending time visiting with him, too.

The Sodus Free Library is sponsoring a Book Fair on Saturday, December 4 from l0 a.m. to l p.m. There will be copies of approximately twenty children's book titles available to purchase. These titles include all three of the best selling Harry Potter books (which we have found to be quite good), Corduroy, The Wizard of Oz, and other classics. New titles include Jan Brett's, The Gingerbread Baby (another cute book) and the newly illustrated Night Before Christmas ( a beautiful new face lift for an old favorite). All books, on consignment from Borders, will be offered at l0% discount. If there are books remaining at the end of the day on Saturday, the Fair will be extended to Sunday , December 5 from 2-4 p.m. Carol invites everyone to plan a visit to the Sodus Free Library for some no-hassle Christmas Shopping. What better gift to give a child than a book?

granny.jpg (5263 bytes)Do you remember Granny Goodstory? The kids probably met her at the Victorian Faire a few years ago at Sodus Point. (That's where the kids and I met her.) I had read a few of her stories during the summer reading program at Sodus Free Library when Jennifer Patton was working there. Granny went on vacation for a little while and now she's back. She has an office at Canterbury Place. Her real name is Diane Phillips, and if you'd like to stop in and say hi, or take one of her classes, give her a call at 716.747.4768. If you're thinking about attending a class (last class was Fabric Crotchet), bring along a business card to be entered in a special holiday raffle to win a beautiful handcrafted, decorative basket. Granny had a tv show on channel 12 as well, perhaps you remember watching. If you don't remember, check with your children.

The Kraft Shack is once again making special Holiday Crafts. Monday, December 6, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., they will be making a Wooden Santa. A country Santa, l2 inches tall, that hangs on the wall. You will rough paint, add a beard and decorate him for his big day on Christmas. $25 includes all.

Don't forget the Storytime Programs at the Williamson Library and the special seasonal craft program beginning December 7 every Saturday from l0 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the program room. While you and your children enjoy making crafts, you can enjoy listening to Christmas music.

sfirep.jpg (22788 bytes)We, of course, have some books to share as well. Don't forget, while you're at the library, to browse through the movie section for holiday tapes. The Olsen Twins have a Christmas video, Winnie the Pooh has a new seasonal video and Mrs.Claus with Angela Lansbury is a fun one to watch. Make a special time in the day to enjoy watching a movie with your kids. Pop some popcorn (micro-wave of course), fix a cup of tea or hot chocolate, and relax.

The Christmas Train will be coming into Sodus tomorrow (Sat., Dec. 4). Just be sure to dress warmly - boots for the chilly floor and mittens are always a must. Bundle up and enjoy. The trains board at 12:30 and 2:30 at the Belden Ave. station. The 4 p.m. Tree-Lighting at the Sodus Village Park will have Santa, Frosty, and some old-fashioned Christmas caroling.

Thinking about picking out the Christmas tree this weekend? There are many places to chose from:

Alexander's Christmas Tree Farm, Trimble Rd., Ontario. Visit Santa, Dec. 4, 5, ll and 12 from l0-3 p.m.

Keymel's Christmas Tree Farm, Walworth-Ontario Rd., Walworth. Wagon rides.

Green Acres Tree Farm, Hogback Hill Rd., Palmyra.

Carl's Christmas Tree Farm, Rt. 88 (north), Newark.

Arbor Road Nursery, Arbor Rd., Walworth. Ride on a wagon to and from the tree fields

On Sunday, December 5, you can go on the Wayne County Museum House tour, decorated in holiday splendor. Visit a one room school house, the county jail, a taxidermy museum, clock museum and the lighthouse museum from l - 5 p.m.

ssp.jpg (10174 bytes)Once you get your Christmas shopping done, you can make a day of Holiday fun with your family. After you've gone to one of the events, write to me and let me know what you thought. Do you have a holiday cookie recipe you'd like to share? Write to me:
