Banquet honors Newark swim team The Lady Reds swim banquet was held on December 12 at the Newark Country Club. Head Varsity Coach John Weyman said he enjoyed working with the girls on the team. Secondly, he was amazed with the improvement of their stroke. Also, the girls continued to have best times all around. Nine of the 11 school records were broken this season, and the Newark team finished fourth in Sectionals in 1999. The juniors presented the seniors with special gifts during the banquet. Seniors honored were Kelly Leeuwen, Emily Williams, Colleen Boyd and Jody Flannery. Some of the highlights mentioned were the 100 butterfly record set by Colleen Boyd. Eighth grader Arden Brust was on the winning relay team that placed first in Sectional competition. She also placed first in league and made Sectional events. Sarah Lewis was an All League performer this season. She was first in the 100 breaststroke and first in the medley event in Sectional competition. Shannon Lewis was the first Newark swimmer in many years to compete at the state meet. She was first in Sectional competition in two different events. Achievement awards: The ninth grade award went to Amie Graf and Shannon Lewis, and the 10th grade award was presented to Martha Clark. The 11th grade award was given to Sarah Lewis and the 12th grade achievement award was given to Colleen Boyd. Boyd was named Swimmer of the Year. The Sportsmanship patch was presented to Emily Williams. The team was awarded the New York State Academic Scholastic Award with a 95.19 average. Those students honored were Colleen Boyd, Martha Clark, Emily Williams, Jessica Loson, Amie Graf, Kelly Leeuwen, Shannon Lewis, Arden Brust, Jody Flannery, Sarah Lewis, Gina Byers and Kristin VanOoyen.
