Newark settles up bridge bill

Sergio Esteban, Senior Engineer for LaBella Associates, appeared before the Newark Vilage Board last night to present the final bills for the East Ave. bridge reconstruction.

Now referred to as the Newark Veterans Memorial Bridge, the project was completed and opened to the public on December 23. Final costs for design, inspection, and construction came in at $899,971 - almost $100,000 more than originally planned.

Trustee Norm Vandemortal made a motion to pay the final bridge bills, with Trustees Peter Blandino, John Palermo, and Mayor Fred Pirelli voting yes. Trustee Tony Virts voted no. Virts had objected to the additional $99,971 needed during construction (due to problems uncovered when the deck was removed). Engineer Esteban praised the board and all village employees for their help during the project.

During public comment, Richard Colacino of Newark Electric Corp. on Harrison St. spoke to the board concerning the lack of sidewalks and curbing in the 100 block of East Ave. (near the new bridge). Colacino referred to the condition as slum-like and asked the board to consider funding these items in the near future. Highway manager Jim Sadler indicated that the area is scheduled for paving in 1999.
