United Church Anniversary, Open House

chuburn.jpg (11975 bytes)On March 7, The United Church of Marion will celebrate its 32nd anniversary with a service at 10 a.m. and an Open House from 11:30 to 1 p.m.

The theme for the day will be, "The Lord is among us," a response to the question asked in the lectionary reading for the day, Exodus 17:7.

The United Church suffered a fire in the fellowship hall and education wing on August 9, 1998. With the generous cooperation of the General Accident Insurance Company, the Best Construction Company, and many members of The United Church family, the damage was repaired and the building is once again in excellent condition. Three sides of the roof were replaced as well as carpeting, walls, insulation and ceilings on both floors. New chalkboards, bulletin boards and window coverings were also added. Because the church family was permitted to contribute its labor, the construction company agreed to install two new windows in the south classrooms and side the north wall of the building.

Since The United Church is in the heart of Marion, and since many heard about the fire and saw the damage, members of the church are inviting the community to see the changes that have taken place since that time. Coffee, punch and cake will be served.

The United Church is a merger of the Marion Baptist Church, founded in 1804, and the First Presbyterian Church of Marion, founded in 1808. The present pastor is the Rev. Dr. Daniel H. Meyer, who began his ministry in February 1996.
