Everyone remembers the Christian story of three Wise Men or Kings following a bright star to bring gifts to the newborn Messiah. Did you know that in Puerto Rico, families include the Three Kings in their holiday celebration by having the children leave hay under their beds on January 5, Three King's Eve? This ensures that the camels of the Three Kings will be well fed on their journey to visit the Messiah. In the morning, the children awaken to find the hay gone and gifts in its place - proof that the Three Kings have surely passed by. This and other Hispanic traditions will be enjoyed at the Three Kings Celebration presented tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 3) at 1:30 p.m., at St. Michael's Church, 401 South Main St., Newark. This project is a collaborative effort of Family Counseling Services of the Finger Lakes, Inc.'s Hispanic Youth Program of Wayne County, and St. Michael's Church. Spend a lively afternoon exploring Hispanic culture, through its music, food and traditions. Rochester author and storyteller Carlos Martinez Alvarez will be on hand to read from his book, Camels on a Tin Roof, a delightful Christmas story about the Three Kings journey to Bethlehem. Youth of the H.Y.P. will portray the traditional nativity scene of the Three Kings while the story is being read. There will be gifts from the Three Kings for all children in attendance. Take a turn at singing Hispanic Christmas carols, or just enjoy the live music. Children will love the Mexican tradition of breaking the pinata and scrambling for candy. Sample Hispanic foods traditionally served at Christmas time, prepared by the members of St. Michael's Church. You may even win one of the door prizes. The afternoon promises to be fun and educational for everyone. Copyright © 1999 |
