ECCC plans for coming year

The Erie Canal Cultural Center recently held its annual meeting at Wayne Finger Lakes BOCES in Newark. Among other business, the group adopted a general budget, designated officers and heard reports from various individuals regarding progress of projects and committees.

The nominating committee proposed adopting the same slate of officers:

  • Dr. Joseph Marinelli, Superintendent of Wayne Finger Lakes BOCES, as elected President;
  • Jim Coulombe, Wayne County planner and long-time canal advocate, as Vice-President;
  • Tim Morell, Superintendent of Lyons Central Schools and member of the Lyons Quality of Life, elected Treasurer;
  • and Martha Dodson, Lyons Public Library board member, was elected Secretary.
  • Michelle Vair, Newark resident and a teacher at Newark's Kelley School, was elected to fill an at-large position on the board.

Following a financial report, the group adopted an annual general operating budget for 1999 of $27,798.

An annual report was given by the Fund Raising Committee, which during 1998 included two major events, a salad lunch sale in June and a Benefit Auction in October, the latter being the more successful of the two.

A third fundraising event, put on by Newark Church of Christ, was also discussed. Held in October, it brought a full crowd to the Lyons Elementary School on Tuesday night to hear A Capella present their internationally known music and message.

Peg Churchill gave the executive director's annual report, highlighting visibility and credibility, both listed as the top priorities for the year's goals.

Project director Tom Chappell updated the board on continuing building progress in the common areas of the front building - completion should be in early 1999. The Buildings and Grounds Committee, headed by Jim Coulombe, had been actively involved in the development of the final plans for renovations of the facility, with the master plan being adopted by the board in October and final documents being processed by the architectural firm Handler, Grosso, Durfee and Associates.

The next Board meeting is scheduled for January 13.
