By John Zornow

At Tuesday's board meeting, the resignation of Newark village clerk/treasurer Michael Tonovitz was accepted by the board, with regret.

Tonovitz, a resident of Palmyra, was hired in February 1997 to replace Ernie Mori. His duties included budget officer, tax collector, payroll/personnel officer, record management officer and public information officer.

Tonovitz has been active in Newark Rotary, and the Greater Newark Chamber of Comerce.

In a letter to the board, the clerk/treasurer indicated that he was resigning for both personal and professional reasons, and was willing to serve the village until a replacement is found, giving the board until April 30.

Tonovitz declined to comment in detail about his reasons for leaving.
