Caucuses for Newark's March election

Five people sought endorsements at Wednesday night's political caucuses. Two will fill the seats of Newark Village Trustees after the March election.

The final caucus determinations were that:

The Republicans will put Kurt Werts and Tony Virts on the ballot; and the Dems' ballot will bear the names John Palermo (incumbent) and James J. Colacino.

James VanSchaffel sought the GOP nod but did not attain it.

About 80 registered Republicans attended the village Republican caucus. Three rounds of votes were necessary to determine who would be chosen to run. In the first ballot, newcomer VanSchaffel was eliminated with 21 votes, compared with 25 for incumbent Virts, and another newcomer, Kurt Werts, who received 33 votes.

In the second ballot, for the same trustee position, Werts edged out Virts 51 to 29. For the second trustee slot, Tony Virts and James VanSchafel got 42 and 35 votes respectivley, giving Virts the nod to run.

At the Democratic caucus, there was no need for several ballots. Palermo and Colacino were both unanimously endorsed. Former Arcadia Supervisor Tom Healy chaired the caucus, with Sharon DeJohn acting as clerk.
