Reds grab first place
Newark is on top of the Finger Lakes East, after a 65-61 win over the Braves at Canandaigua. Pictured is #31 Shawn Oakleaf, who scored 15 points, and #23 Jason Sloane during Tuesday's game. Newark, 10-2 overall and 8-2 in the Finger Lakes East, ran the floor extremely well in the first period to take a 17-12 lead. Junior Brent Burgess hit two straight jumpers including a trey, making it 22-12 at the 6:38 mark. Newark held a 10-point lead before the Braves' Jim Coyne scored on a lay-up as time ran out in the half to cut the Reds lead to 37-29 at halftime. Josh Herman scored seven points in the first half with center Shawn Oakleaf adding seven points. In the third period the Braves cut the lead to 43-40 before back to back steals by Sloane and Oakleaf gave the Reds a 47-40 lead. Newark led 48-44 after three periods of play.
A 3-pointer by Justin Whyte made it 55-49 and a Baker lay-up made it a 9-0 run for the Reds and a 57-49 score. During the four minutes of play the Reds got two charges defensively. Canandaigua cut the lead to 57-54 but baskets by Fernandez and Oakleaf made it 61-57. After a time-out, the Reds executed off the inbound play to make it 63-57. Two free throws by Baker gave the Reds their final points of the night. Oakleaf scored 15 points for the Reds coming off the bench. Baker added ten with six of those in the final period. Herman added nine, Fernandez scored eight and Burgess six points. Newark was 7 of 14 from the foul line. Their effort on the rebounding boards became a big reason for the Reds win. Eric Weber scored 22 points in a losing cause. The win was the Reds eight straight on the year. Newark hosts Palmyra Macedon for a 7:30 p.m. Friday night.
