County briefs
By Donna Comella

When the Wayne County Board of Supervisors met on Tuesday, legislators:

  • Approved funding to assist the Village of Newark in the realignment of the N. Main St./Harrison St. intersection. The total project cost is estimated at $210,000 with the village contributing $30,000 cash and $100,000 in-kind labor; $10,000 for land acquisition and $40,000 from a HUD grant for purchase/installation of a new traffic light - the county will fund no more than $30,000.
  • Heard from an angry Carm Pascarella when it came time to approve 1999 highway projects. Although Valley Drive in the Town of Rose headed the list, Pascarella wasn't happy that the project included only 1.2 miles of road.

"I've been here for eight years and got nothing from the county," complained Pascarella. He ran down a list of projects that he thought had inappropriately been given higher priority than his town's projects.

"Are we in Wayne County? Where are we?" asked Pascarella. He repeated the questions several times before Donna Chittenden responded. Pascarella wasn't through. "We've been on the list since 1902 and now we only get part of it done? Maybe somebody in 2502 can get the rest of it."

Pascarella told supervisors that the road is in such bad need of repair, the town crew can't even get down the road to plow it. Red in the face, Pascarella asked, "What is the fairness in it?"

  • Received notice from the Wayne Weekly that the paper would not be able to accept a designation as the Board's official newspaper. The Board gave the designation to the Wayne County Mail. Voting against the move were supervisors Pascarella, Dave Spickerman (Butler), Louis DeLisio (Galen), Monica Deyo (Marion) and Frank Guelli (Walworth)
  • Heard a brief presentation by Wayne County Clerk Linda Shaffer regarding this year's United Way/Red Cross Campaign. The 1999 Campaign will kick off on March 17 with a Day of Caring. Shaffer is the 1999 Campaign Cabinet Chair.
