New lunch program in Lyons The doors will open at 11:45 on February 8 at The First Presbyterian Church of Lyons for the "Lyons Lunch Program." The mission of the program is to provide hot, healthy meals to anyone in need. There is no charge for the lunch. The menu includes hot soup and a sandwich, beverage (and a dessert when available). Serving will be from Noon to 12:45 Monday through Friday. The program is being housed at the First Presbyterian Church of Lyons. It is an extension of the Lyons Food Pantry and is being sponsored, in part through the Inter-Church Council of Lyons. Volunteers are needed to help serve guests! The church is also looking for donations of canned soup, supplies, etc. Financial contributions are appreciated as well! Rick Pinckney, a deacon of the church and a member of the Advisory Board said, "We've hired a cook/coordinator: Teresa Herman, of Lyons. Teresa has lots of ideas and is very enthusiastic about being part of our team!" Rick Pinckey has been helping to recruit and train volunteers and solicit donations from local businesses. Pinckney also designed the logo for the Lunch Program. Pinckney said, "We have people to help, now we just need guests! The Lyons Lunch Program is more than a soup kitchen - it's a community effort - people coming together to help one another." The Rev. Cynthia Huling Hummel, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Lyons is also excited about the program. She said "The Lyons Lunch program enables us to love God and love our neighbors in a simple but significant way!" For more information on how you can help, call the church at (315) 946-4723. The First Presbyterian Church of Lyons is located at 11 Queen Street at the corner of Broad. Copyright © 1999 |
