Newark Raptors keep winning Randy Erwin and two relievers combined on a 6-hit shutout as the Newark Raptors shutout the Hornell Dodgers Wednesday night at Hornell. Combined with Geneva's loss to Wellsville, the Raptors pulled to within one game in the NCBL West Division. Erwin and Hornell's Matt Irvin were locked in a pitching duel, as the offenses traded zeroes over the first six innings. The Raptors finally broke the double shutout by scoring twice in the seventh inning. A Derin McMains RBI single scored Ron Hassey with the first run. After McMains stole second base, Phil Warren singled him in with the second and final run. Despite scoring only two runs, the Raptors had thirteen hits, including at least one in every inning. Every Raptors hitter in the lineup had at least one hit. Newark also stole seven bases, but left fifteen runners on base. Randy Erwin pitched nearly seven innings, giving up only five hits, while striking out seven Dodgers. Jeff Huff and Saxon Berry completed the shutout. Combined, Raptors pitching had twelve strikeouts on the night. Irvin took the loss, despite striking out ten Raptors in seven innings. David Klebonis had three hits for the Raptors. On Thursday, Newark beat Wellsville 7-5. Wes Ray earned the win in relief. Copyright © 1999 |
