Newark School board organizes At the annual organizational meeting held Tuesday night, the Newark Board of Education members elected their President and Vice-President for the coming school year 1990-2000. District Clerk Robert Fogel conducted the organizational meeting until a President was elected, and called for nominations for the president's position. Board member Nancy Rohlin, having just been sworn in for another term, nominated David Howard to succeed himself. Russ Harris seconded Rohlin's nomination. Voting in favor of Howard as president were Rohlin, Harris, and Barb Wheeler. David Honness voted no, and Jeff Snow abstained.
The board went on to make yearly appointments, and committee assignments, and authorizations. Also approved was the 1999-00 school calendar. Pre-caucus campaign calls still a topic With the organizational meeting complete, the board went into regular session starting with public comment. Marbletown Rd. resident Jim Hurley presented a report of an incident that was discussed at the July 2 board meeting. Howard had asked Hurley to present any details of the pre-Republican caucus phone calls that would help the board investigate the matter. Hurley gave a copy of his report to each board member. He then pressed Superintendent Robert Christmann to apologize to Michael and Ange DeJohn for comments reportedly made to them at the June 15 caucus. Hurley went on to say that an apology is not covered by the open meetings law. Supt. Christmann told Hurley that he had met with Mrs. DeJohn and had indeed apologized to her in specific areas. Mrs. DeJohn then read a prepared statement indicating she had no part in the (caucus) incident and wanted the matter put to rest. She said that the apology given to her by Christmann was his idea of what happened, and went on to say that it was common knowledge in the community that calls were made on school time, by school personnel, for the benefit of candidates Gary Grant, Gerry DeBarr, and Diane Allerton. Howard thanked Hurley for his report, indicating that the incident will be further investigated by the board. Howard reminded him, however, that individual discipline of a school employee cannot be shared with the public. In other school business: Discussed the Perkins Cafeteria. After Thanksgiving recess, the cafeteria space will not be available, and other temporary space will have to be found in the building. Graduation 1999 was discussed. Board members tossed around ideas to improve graduation exercises. Christmann cautioned that awards must be properly maintained and described out of respect for those whom the awards honor. Christmann introduced Michelle Stone, recently hired as the new High School Vice Principal. He described the process to hire a new administrator, indicating that the district is now seeking a second assistant principal for the high school to fill a vacancy. Copyright © 1999 |
