Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

rhinocerousThis weekend we went to the Seneca Park Zoo. I hobbled up and down the hills in search of the White Rhino and the Ostriches. (I asked the same question many do - this is not a white Rhino. He looked gray to me. In reading the sign, I found that the Rhino has a complicated name that was mispronounced by the English and ended up becoming 'White.' The Ostriches were in an area behind the Rhino and were apparently shy that day, so I got only a brief glimpse of them. I envied the seals and Polar bears playing in the water. We watched them for a while, then it was back outside to the real world. (The hot, real world! The cast comes off in a couple of weeks and it wont be any to soon for me! )

I've found a pen-pal who has lived on the Island of Maui for 27 years. So, on those cold, wintry days (which we won't think about right now), I can share what people in the warmer climates are up to. (And Eileen Hooper can help out as well from Florida.) They may not be able to mail us any polar bearsunshine, but they can tell us what it's like in the warmer states.

The Boxer Rescue Program has two young Boxer brothers that are looking for good homes. They are both l3 months old and would be adopted together. Sometimes, if the puppy is like Sarah, one puppy at a time is plenty! The group is also looking for people who could foster parent (so to speak ) for the other dogs since there are so many looking for homes. If you are looking for a Boxer or would be interested in helping out, you can call The Genesee Valley Boxer Rescue at 7l6.748.9056 and check out the web site

My condolences to the Castle family for their loss. Albert Jay Castle passed away July 24 at Rochester General Hospital.

Do you remember the Rose of Sharon trees I mentioned in an earlier column? Well, I've been advised that one of Al Dobbin's trees is in bloom and the one in front with white double blossoms is almost there. And, speaking of Sergeant Street, there's a new family that has moved into the Savino gnomehouse. Al paid them a visit and they had a 'guitar-playing' session. Sounds like Al and the new neighbors will have lots of fun. During Christmas, they can have cocoa and sing Christmas Carols. (And don't forget Al's peanut brittle - I miss it already!)

The Sodus Library has gotten many new books for young adults to check out :

How I Spent My Last Night on Earth by Todd Strasser

The War in Georgia by Jerrie Oughton

Of Two Minds by Carol Matas

In My Enemy's House; The Adventures of the Blue Avenger by Norma Howe

They sound pretty scary and full of adventure.

Don't miss the Storytime at the Sodus Library on Mondays from l0:30-ll:30 And remember, everytime you go to the library, enter the kids' names in the prize drawing. There are many ways to win great prizes, and the more they read, the more they'll want to read. Reading is a great way to spend a summer afternoon.

dogThe Williamson Library's Storytimes are on Tuesdays at l0:30 through August 3 for Children 4 and up. Younger children may attend with an adult. Don't forget crafts from ll a.m. to 8 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Williamson Library has some new books, too, including Good Night Baby Bear by Frank Asch. (We're still waiting for our Party Animals to come through the mail from Williamson. They must be acting up. )

If your kids are into Franklin, Blues Clues or Kipper, try the Nick Jr. Website for some cute coloring pages

Have a nice week and write to me. I'm getting a little homesick, so tell me what's happening in Wayne County.
