Foster Grandparent program news The Foster Grandparent Program and the Senior Companion Program joined forces for the third annual wellness picnic on July 14. The picnic was held at the Lyons VFW pavilion, and began with coffee and cookies. A group of approximately 85 volunteers enjoyed three presentations. Common Sense, from Newark, did a presentation on stress reduction; John Coons, from FLCC presented on Chinese Heating and Tai Chi; and the dynamic duo of Joanne Lightenberg and Paula Beckers from The Health Association instructed the group in exercises specifically designed for the senior population. Foster Grandparents provide individual attention to children up to the age of 21 who have special needs. They work in a variety of childcare settings, such as Head Start centers, schools, Roosevelt Childrens Center, Happiness House, and day care centers. In return for 20 hours of service a week, Foster Grandparents receive a tax-free stipend every month, travel reimbursement, and other benefits. Senior Companions provide service to people 21 years of age and older. The Foster Grandparent Program is sponsored by Wayne County Action Program, Inc., and funded by the Corporation for National Service and the State Office for the Aging.
