Throop exhibit in Pultneyville The Pultneyville Historical Society will hold a reception for the opening of the Captain Horatio Nelson Throop exhibit at the Historical Society house, 4130 Mill St., on June 20 from 1-5 p.m. This will initiate the first major exhibit in the recently acquired society building. Captain Throop, 1807-1884, was a prominent Pultneyville resident, ship builder, inventor, and captain of both schooners and steamships, He skippered many cargo and passenger vessels on the Great Lakes. In the exhibit are a variety of wind- and water-driven propellers, governors, and rotating mechanisms including an early patent model. Throop experimented with a wind-driven screw propeller in the 1830's. He is particularly noted for his work in fluid dynamics and his active participation in the Underground Railroad. Escaped slaves were transported to safety in Canada aboard Throop's lake vessels. All are invited to join in the opening celebration and enjoy Captain Throop's favorite chocolate cookies. After the opening day, the exhibit will be open without charge from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day weekend. Copyright
