Archaeology camp for kids

Dig in to the past with the Wayne County Historical Society and the Department of Anthropology, St. John Fisher College, Rochester for the Fourth Annual Summer Camp and Discovery Days in Wayne County Archaeology.

The program offers participants a chance to discover the wonders of archaeology for themselves. Through actual excavation on the Joel N. Lee Farm, North Rose and other sites, the Archaeology Camp provides basic training in archaeological field techniques; survey and site identification, mapping, excavation, artifact identification and processing. The program is designed to give a taste of "real archaeology," without the long-term commitment of a traditional field school.

Excavations run Wednesday to Sunday, and participants can join for as little as two days, or as long as five weeks. No previous experience is necessary and first-timers and the differently-abled are encouraged to participate. The Archaeology Camp is designed for ages 10 (fifth grade) and up. Total number of participants on each day of the excavation will be limited to insure quality of instruction.

For younger students there is Archaeology Discovery Days; a half-day exploration of archaeology and local history for students ages 4-9 (and an accompanying adult).

The Archaeology Camp will be offered for six weeks, beginning Sat., July 14 through Sun., August 21.

Archaeology Discovery Days will be offered on Sat., July 31 and August 14.

For more information or to register, call the Society at 946-4943.
