Georgia Zappia of Newark, a veteran teacher at St. Michael School, has been named a Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year. She has taught English/Communication, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies in all elementary grades except fourth grade. She has been a Drug Awareness Liason to Newark Public Schools; Red Ribbon Week Coordinator; Flag Day Coordinator; Catholic Schools' Week Committee; hosted a Japanese intern for three months, and has had a student teacher from Nazareth College and Oswego this year. Zappia has taught at St. Michael's for 16 years, and has taught remedial English in Sri Lanka. She is presently a second grade teacher who can get any child to read, take pride in their work, and have self-discipline. "Her students are among the most polite and happiest in the school," says Principal Kathy Peters. "Mrs. Zappia makes education come alive and has a deep caring for each of her students."
