Donald S. Cole, 100, of Field Street, Port Gibson, died June 15, 1999 at his home. Friends may call tonight (Thurs., June 17) from 7-9 p.m., tomorrow, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Parker-Rayfield and Murphy Funeral Home, 127 East Miller St., Newark. The Port Gibson Fire Department will meet tonight at 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m., in Park Presbyterian Church in Newark, with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Port Gibson Cemetery. Don Cole was born Feb. 19, 1899, in Newark, the son of Albert and Mary Hallahan Cole. For more than 70 years, he operated Don's Cycle Shop, first in Newark and then, relocating in 1946, to Port Gibson. He was an authority on the repair of Indian motorcycles. Don had worked for many years for Reed Manufacturing, then as the manager of the maintenance and repair shop at Hallagan Manufacturing for 23 years, retiring in 1969 at the age of 70. Don was a life member of the Port Gibson Fire Department. In 1934 he was a founding member of the Wayne County Motorcycle Club and was a charter member of the American Motorcyclist Association. He was also a member of the North American 40+ Touring Riders, Inc. He is survived by three daughters, Phyllis (George) Zeger of Phelps, Marion (James) Wheaton of East Williamson and Barbara (DuWayne) Paulick of Rochester; son, Paul Cole of Arcadia, CA; 23 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; sister, Kathleen Cole-Burditt of Scottsville; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Bernice, in 1992; two sons, Robert in 1985 and William in 1995; and a daughter, Eleanor Guchone, in 1997. Memorials in Don's name may be made to either the Port Gibson Fire Department or to the Park Presbyterian Church, Maple Court, Newark, NY 14513.
