Raptors baseball

The Newark Raptors have now won four out of their last five games, after sweeping a doubleheader from the Rome Indians last night at Colburn Park. Newark had 4 triples among their 22 hits in the twinbill.

Game 1: McMains Shuts Down Rome

Ryan McMains gave up only three hits in 6 innings and the Raptors' 3 early runs were enough to defeat the Indians 3-2.

Marcus HinsonNewark scored 2 runs in the first inning on consecutive triples by Mike LaPointe and Brad Hassey, followed by a single by Derin McMains. The Raptors added another run in the second on a LaPointe RBI single. Ryan McMains took over from there.

Ryan McMains wasn't overpowering, striking out only one batter. However, he gave up just one hit in his first five innings of work, at one time retiring 11 Indians in a row. In the sixth, he gave up 2 unearned runs and, after allowing a leadoff walk in the seventh inning, McMains was lifted for Saxon Berry. Berry set down the Indians to earn his second save in as many days.

Jay LaPolla settled down after the first 2 innings and pitched a complete game loss for Rome.

Game 2:

Newark scored in each of the first five innings en route to an 11-2 thrashing of Rome. Casey Saucke drove in 3 runs and Brad Hassey added 2 RBIs and 3 hits.

The game was tied 1-1 when the Raptors came to bat in the second inning, but that wasn't the case for long. Newark erupted for 6 runs in the frame and sent 10 batters to the plate. The Raptors added single runs in the third and fourth innings, and 2 runs in the fifth.

Every batter in Newark's starting lineup reached base, and 8 of the starting 9 had hits in the game. Matt Arizin pitched the final 2-1/3 innings to earn the win.
