Two 3-2 Raptor wins

The Newark Raptors rallied from 2-0 deficits entering the seventh (and last) inning in both games of their Monday doubleheader with Cortland. In both games, a Raptors triple keyed their seventh inning rallies. And in both games, the Raptors pulled out improbable 3-2 wins over Cortland. The second game lasted ten innings. The Raptors have now played five straight one-run games, losing the first three over the weekend.

the first six innings. However, the Raptors scored three times in their last at-bat and shocked the Cortland Apples 3-2.

Down 2-0, Johnny Keelan led off the seventh with a pinch-hit single. A passed ball moved him to second base. After two balls were thrown to Mike LaPointe, Cortland opted to intentionally walk him. One out later, Derin McMains hit a shot down the leftfield line that eluded a diving Richie Smith for a two-run triple, tying the game 2-2. Clayton Soule was brought in to relieve starter Aaron Russelburg. Dave Klebonis singled to rightfield to bring home McMains and give the Raptors a come from behind 3-2 win.

Jeff Huff picked up the win in relief for Newark. Joe Yarbrough started and pitched six innings, giving up only five hits.

Game 2

Brian Anderson drove in the tying run in the seventh inning and scored the winning run in the tenth inning, as the Newark Raptors downed Cortland 3-2.

The Raptors trailed 2-0 entering the seventh inning and Cortland pitcher Max Havel was cruising along, looking for the shutout. In fact, Havel had a no-hitter broken up with two outs in the sixth inning by Johnny Keelan.

However, Dave Klebonis led off the seventh inning with a single and Phil Warren followed with a triple over the rightfielder's head to score Klebonis. One out later, Anderson singled home Warren to tie the game. Three innings later, Havel was still on the mound when Anderson stroked a one-out single. Brad Hassey singled, advancing Anderson to third base. Cory Hamrick hit a grounder to second base, and the throw home beat Anderson. However, the throw was slightly up the first base line and Anderson slid around the tag, scoring the winning run and setting off a wild celebration in the Raptor's dugout.

Cortland scratched out only three hits, all singles, against three Raptors pitchers. The Apples' last hit came in the fifth inning. A Ben Moseley RBI single in the second plated Cortland first run, while a throwing error in the third inning scored Apples' third-baseman Michael Tucker to make the game 2-0. However, Raptors pitching shut Cortland down the rest of the game.

Robert Schulz picked up the win in relief for Newark.
