Newark Lady Reds basketball update The Newark girls basketball team advanced to the Final Four in Class BB. Newark won 61-54 over the Penn Yan Mustangs on Feb. 27 at Newark. It was the third meeting between these two evenly match squads this season, with the Reds winning the previous two games by close scores. "I was a little concerned playing three times but we changed a couple of of our match-ups against them this time around," said Reds Coach Diane Abrey. Newark (16-6) took the early 12-7 lead and extended it to 12-9 at the end of one quarter of play. In the second period the Reds controlled the boards Newark freshman Angie Perillo grabbed a offensive rebound to give the Reds a 20-14 lead with 4:45 left in the first half. The Mustangs rallied to trail 27 to 23 at halftime. In the third period both squads went back and forth with Newark extending its lead to 38-33 -with 50 seconds remaining hitting a jumper. Newark led 42 tro 36 after three periods of play. In the fourth period Newark sealed the game with a 3-pointer by Kadi Burgess with 3:46 remaining making the score 53 to 44. "We thought our balance would hurt them down the stretch," said Abrey. LaTanya Parker scored a game high 23 points with teammates Kadi Burgess, Angie Perillo, Keya Collins all adding ten points apiece. For Parker it marked another outstanding performance by the Lady Reds' all-time high scorer. "LaTanya has a history of picking up her game at Sectional time and especially now it's a sense of urgency for this senior," said the coach. Rebounding was a big plus with Ange Perillo getting nine rebounds, and Keya Collins and Nicole Milliman pulling down six rebounds apiece. The Penn Yan Coach Bob Church, a veteran coach, has announced that he would be retiring. "I have no regrets about the season. Newark had a little bit more firepower at the end," he said. Newark takes on the number one seed Honeoye Falls-Lima Bulldogs (21-0) at Webster Schroeder on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
